The Groningen is a heavy warmblood horse with three good basic gaits: the step is spacious and energetic, the trot is smooth and economical, there is a sufficiently good canter. Groningen horses can provide long-term high work performance and have good health. The minimum height after 3 years of age is 15.3hh for stallions and geldings; and 15.2hh for mares. 

The most common colors are dark brown and black with low to minimal white markings.
